For foreign students aged 16 and over who want to study and reside in the United Kingdom, the Student or Child Student Visa (previously known as the Tier 4 Student Visa) is available.

Non-British nationals are granted immigration status to live in the United Kingdom and study at different colleges and institutions.

  • The Tier 4 Student Visa allows you to remain in the United Kingdom for the length of your educational pursuits.
  • Those who are 18 years or older and studying at a licensed UK institution at a degree level or above will often be permitted to remain for a period of five years.
  • Also students studying at a lower level than a bachelor’s degree will be allowed to stay for 2 years.
  • Those who want to continue living in the United Kingdom once their studies are over have a number of choices.
  • Student visas for the United Kingdom under Tier 4 and short-term visas are also available.
  • Tier 4 student visas are designed to enable individuals from countries outside of the European Economic Area to study in the United Kingdom.
  • When applying for a Tier 4 student visa, you must have been accepted into a UK educational institution with a valid Tier 4 sponsorship license for admission.

If you are sponsored by the government, the Home Office will alter your leave and restrict your time in the UK to ensure that you satisfy the criteria of your sponsor. The amount of leave that the Home Office provides for each course length is shown in the following table.

Courses and duration for UK tier 4 visa students

Students on Tier 4 visas must devote at least 15 hours per week to study, and they must be able to cover the costs of the course, maintenance, and housing, etc.

For Tier 4 students at UK institutions, loans are available through Student Finance to help them pay their tuition costs.

Help with maintenance and other expenses, on the other hand, is often limited to UK and EU citizens, as well as those who have legal residency in the UK.

This implies anybody who has been lawfully present in the UK for three years or more.

Hours of Work Allowed For Tier 4 Students

Some Tier 4 students may be able to work up to 20 hours a week in addition to their studies.

  • After changes to UK immigration legislation implemented in 2015, Tier 4 students at publicly funded further education institutions are no longer permitted to work.
  • Tier 4 visa holders at higher education institutions will no longer be able to transfer to another visa category in the United Kingdom from inside the country after their studies are completed, such as Tier 2 or Tier 5 work visas.
  • Tier 4 college students who want to work in the United Kingdom must leave the country and apply for the UK work visa from a country other than the United Kingdom.

Students with Tier 4 visas

  • Students who are 18 years or older and have been given a place on a program at a UK educational institution are eligible to apply.
  • Studies at the undergraduate and postgraduate level are covered by this visa, as well as courses at the third level, such as A levels.
  • Some students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during vacations while still enrolled in classes.

  • This sponsorship is intended for students under the age of eighteen who have been accepted into an educational institution in the United Kingdom that has a valid Tier 4 sponsorship license.
  • Tier 4 sponsors are often private, fee-paying institutions of higher learning.
  • Some students over the age of 16 may be able to work up to 10 hours per week during the school year and full-time during the summer and winter vacations.

Tier 4 Visa for  Dependents and Spouses

Some kids may want to bring family members along with them to school. Tier 4 (General) Student visas enable family members to apply to accompany the visa holder to the United Kingdom or to stay in the country if the visa holder is already in the country.

Included in the definition of family are married, civil, and unmarried partners, as well as children under the age of 18.

Students who want to bring family members to the United Kingdom must satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

  • In the UK for at least one year, pursuing an NQF level 7 (UK Master’s degree) or higher qualification
  • Sponsored by the UK government on a program lasting at least six months, or enrolled in a Doctorate Extension Scheme course throughout that time period.

It is also possible for parents of children on Tier 4 (Child) Student visas to apply for a visa under the Parent of a Tier 4 Child category.

What happens if my Tier 4 Visa is no longer valid?

The duration of your Tier 4 Visa will be determined solely by the length of your course and whether or not you have previously completed any other kind of study in the United Kingdom.

  • When your visa is about to expire, you may be able to extend your stay in the United Kingdom by either moving to a possible employment path or enrolling for additional study on a new program while still in the country.
  • It is critical that you do not just wait for your Student Visa to expire before seeking to transfer to a new kind of visa.
  • If you continue to reside in the United Kingdom after your Student Visa has expired, you will be deemed an overstayer.
  • As a result, you must submit an application to the Home Office for the appropriate visa or extension. In the event that you want to continue your studies in the United Kingdom after graduating, you may submit an application to extend your current Student Visa.
  • You must, of course, have a licensed sponsor in order to participate. As an example, the Doctorate Extension Scheme provides students who have completed a Ph.D.
  • A Tier 4 Pilot Scheme is also available at a number of institutions, and it is designed for individuals who want to study for a Master’s degree that will take up to 13 months in length.
  • Those who are given permission to remain under this program will also be awarded an additional six months of stay to enable them to search for employment opportunities in the United Kingdom.
  • If the Home Office gives you permission to remain in the country, you will get written confirmation of their decision.

These are some of the points you need to take care while applying for the UK 4 Tier Visa. Rest assured you shall be having a great time while exploring a range of opportunities while studying in some of the prestigious colleges of the UK.
